"Could not execute menu item (internal error)..."

Hi everyone,
Just installed WAMP but can't seem to get it to work. This is my first time trying to install and run a server.
Tray icon is yellow/white with a padlock on. Localhost won't one anything - I just get a blank page. Same goes for phpmyadmin and sqlitemanager. I tried to find the "most common errors" section on jlbn.net but nothing... Wen I click on any of the PHP menu items, I get this error:

Aestan Tray Menu:
Could not execute menu item (internal error) [Exception] Could not perform service action: the service has not been started.

I have tried restarting all services a couple of times. Clicking the PUT ONLINE link gives me the same error. Help please?

first thing first, I didn't have time to update that "most common errors" page, so it's not there

second, yellow means only 1 service running, most likely apache is not running, so make sure you dont' have anything in this list: IIS, Skype, Zone Alarm, NOD32, Eset, Internet Optimizer, Google Accelerator, any other database server, any other webserver?

Thanks! Skype was the problem... but why?
Does this mean if I want to use WAMP server I need to have my Skype shut down? No can do. I use Skype for business talk quite often. Any suggestions?

Setup Skype to use different port so you can use both Skype and wamp.

Setup skype using different port as follows File -> Options -> Connection -> Uncheck "Use port 80 as an alternative for..."

Thanks! It works alright now. Of course I think it would be a good idea to describe this and similar issues in a list of Common Problems for Newbies (like me)!

I have the same problem as the original poster, however I think my issue is caused by IIS.

When I view the page headers, the response says Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.0

I'm on windows vista ultimate, I suppose IIS was configured automatically.

I have no idea how to disable it, does anyone know?

Theory, you can have both, but IIS and Apache/Wamp are both web server and might conflict in some way, so you have to disable IIS in order for Wamp to work

Disable IIS in Vista:

Control Panel, Uninstall Programs, Turn Widows Features On or Off, uncheck Internet Information Services

Disable IIS in XP:

Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck Internet Information Services (IIS)

Restart computer, then restart Wamp

Hi,

I have the same problem, both with Wamp and sraight apache. I do have NOD 32 and the problem still exists, even with AV and Firewall turned off

Is there any way around this? Or do I need to go to a different AV etc. programme? if so, are G Data or Kapersky OK?

Thanks

William

Hi again,

Further to this error I have completely removed NOD32 using Revo Uninstaller, but I still get the same error when I try to start Wamp. Any ideas? Getting desperate, have spent the whole day on this so far.

i did have IIS running but have disabled this. I am running Vista Home Premium.

Hi,
yes, I re installed Wamp, after also removing it using Revo Uninstaller.

However, I also have a window... "A runtime error has occured. do you wish to debug? Line 82. Error: object expected."

This pops up twice when I re boot.

So I think I have more going on. Am looking at the possibility of re installing Windows, but am reluctant to do so unless I have to.

SFC finds no integrity problems

Yesterday managed to get things working - today, without changing anything, nothing works. Localhost, phpmyadmin, any php file in my www folder generates IEE not found message. Changed ports - no change. IIS has been disabled, so has Skype. Clicking on the Aestan Menu produces the same error. I never can get any real work done. Any suggestions ?

already reinstalled nod32 as well??? if yes, then you should look for another av since nod32 cause problem not for just this wamp package but most if not all any other wamp package as well

sorry, that's for the other user

IIS and Apache/Wamp are both web server and might conflict in some way, so you have to disable IIS in order for Wamp to work

Disable IIS in Vista/Win7:

Control Panel, Uninstall Programs, Turn Widows Features On or Off, uncheck Internet Information Services

Disable IIS in XP:

Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck Internet Information Services (IIS)

Restart computer, then restart Wamp

Also, open file hosts in folder C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc and make sure you have only this line and nothing else

127.0.0.1 localhost

also, if susing skype then open skype... tools>options>connection>advanced> untick "use port 80"

Hi and thanks.
Cleaned up hosts - have no Skype - no IIS - nothing but AVG and DreamWeaver. Problem persists. Apache and PHP error logs show nothing to explain this. Could Dreamweaver have triggered this ?
