Cannot get WampServer 2.2 to 'run'

Hi

I am completely new to this (first post) and have little tech expertise on configuring servers, databases etc.

I have Win7 64-bit, plenty of ram etc.

I have today downloaded and installed WS2.2 to enable me to explore and develop php coding with mysql.

BUT I cannot get anything to happen... I tried accessing 'localhost' but I just get 'access forbidden'... Clicking on the desktop icon doesn't do much...

What am I doing wrong (it must be me :-)..)?

Patient help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Up-date:-

Well, I didn't do anything, just left the machine on and cooked some pasta...

When I came back I browsed some forum entries and found this...

can you access localhost by using this address

[127.0.0.1]
-----------------------<

I tried it and got through to WampServer home page.

Some progress so far... But what did I do right?

You need to look at your hosts file

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

It should have this line in it.

127.0.0.1 localhost

--------------------------

The hosts file is protected by windows, in order to save it you must have Administrator privilages.
Vista/W7/W8 you may think you are an Administrator BUT YOU ARE NOT.

To successfully save the hosts file do this to launch your editor with Admin Privilages.

Locate your editors icon on the desktop or from the Start menus ( notepad will do if you have nothing else )
left click + shift over your chosen editor icon - will show a menu.
select "Run As Administrator" from the menu.
Navigate your editor to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

When you have made changes you will now be allowed to save them.
