Where to specify the root passwd for MySQL?

As far as I understand phpmyadmin access the MySQL DB as user "root" (e.g. for creating DBs and granting priviledges).

Assume now I changed the password for root (from bnoting/blank to something).

Where (in which config file) do I have to enter the password so that phpmyadmin can continue to access MySQL ?

Is there a way to let phpmyadmin prompt for a password if necessary?
