figured it out. IE has a checkbox to display intranet sites in compatibility mode. Unchecked it and it works perfectly.

I set up a bitnami installation of the WAMP stack and installed an installation of Joomla 3.3 on it. I can access the site perfectly from networked computers using chrome, but IE (tested on versions 9-11) reports an unsupported browser, unless it is viewed on the host computer through the localhost address in IE. In that case it works fine. I have also replicated the site to a commercial web
