Mod-Rewrite in Joomla 1.5.26

We are using WAMP on a production site and everytime I turn on the .htaccess file I get a 404 error, server not configured correctly. Since we are running and hosting the site ourselves do we need to turn on a particular PHP Extension/s?

Please let me know your thoughts...

You need the rewrite_module activated for sure.

wampmanager -> Apache Modules -> rewrite_module
