complete newbie test first install php

Hi just installed version 2.2 and trying to open index.php or testmysql.php, ie just offers to save the file not actually open. I also notice that httpd.conf doesn't contain a entry for PHPIniDir, is this correct?
I have been trying to setup apache - php for a few weeks and always hit a problem with PHPIniDir, I was hoping that wampserver would not have this problem?
I am clueless to what I am doing wrong????
