Apps cannot access databases

WAMP is installed, running green and phpMyAdmin works fine. I am able to create a database and both my userID and password have been left as default, meaning root.
When I try to install WordPress it asks for my server which I have defined as localhost. database name and password (both root) but I get the following error and have checked everything specified.
I am running on Windows Vista 64 bit and have installed the 64 bit version of WAMP.

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password? YES
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname? YES
Are you sure that the database server is running? YES
