Installing WAMP server on windows 7 pc

I am attempting to install a WAMP server on my local hard drive in order to develop and test pages and layout for a Wordpress site.

I've hit a snag with the installation of WAMP. It installs fine – 64 bit version on a Windows 7 machine – and the little pink W icon appears in the task bar – but I cannot get the services bar or little “gas gauge” icon to appear so I can "start services".

Temporarily turning off firewalls and reinstalling hasn’t worked. However, a “port analysis” app said all ports on my desktop machine are “closed”. Could that be a clue?

Any help appreciated.
