help please, php not showing in browser

hello
i am a newb to wamp server, i am trying to learn php and av got bit of a problem with page loading. the page loads but the php doesnt execute. on the course am doing the work files will not load. wen i make just a simple
<?
print "welcome" ;
?>
nothing shows up i just get the done in the bottom left side of my browser. any help would be much appreciated
am runnin g windows 7 x64 with latest updates
my browser is mozilla firefox 3.6
version of wampserver is WampServer2.0i
if any 1 can help me thanks in advance

Just use full php tags <?php and not <? and it would work.
