WampServer

I'm no expert (barely even novice) at MySQL, Apache etc (so, in general, WAMP).

I was using wamp just fine to make joomla website run on my computer. I decided to download an install the latest version of wamp and now, when i click on any of the websites from localhost, instead of showing the website i get the message "Database Error: Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL".

What's the problem and how do i fix it?

Your mysql service is not started.
First start it from wamp menu -> Mysql -> Service submenu.
If it fails, open mysql log (from mysql submenu) to find anything useful...

Done. Still doesn't work. MySQL is definitely running.

I suspect (but what do i know) that there's a problem running the mysql database only on a newer version of the mysql service???

Did you run a backup before you upgrade wamp as the new version has prob overwritten your prev db. Test and see if you can reach your db via phpmyadmin. Prob you will find that your db is now empty so you might need to redo all settings including tables etc.

after upgraded, new mysql version has no db, and you will get error w/ connection unless you switch back to older version, backup, switch to new, then restore db

Just in case anyone else is having the same trouble, i found the solution.

When i reinstalled wamp, it seemed to clear my privileges from PHPMyAdmin. All i had to do was go in to phpmyadmin and remake new users matching the same username and password as the ones that seemed to have been deleted in the reinstall.

if you can't remember what the username and password were for your joomla database, simply go to the website(s) configuration.php file and you should find the details there.

You reinstall wamp but did not delete wamp folder containing projects and databases.
You cant see your datas because you changed mysql version.
Each mysql version own its databases (and so its users). You can export your databases from the previous version then import them into the new one using phpmyadmin or mysqldump, etc.
