localhost doesnt work but 127.0.0.1 does?

Hello,

First, I Love WAMP! I regularly use it to test CMS and phpbb- thanks!

Second, when I use the search on this forum it hangs on "please wait..."

Finally, my current problem:

localhost doesnt work and I get a DNS error in firefox.

When I try 127.0.0.1 it works great, the IP address is replaced with 10.225.136.236 and the wamp server index page appears.

Also, when I try to access phpmyadmin it says FORBIDDEN "You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/ on this server."

This is my machine at work.

What exactly is going on here?

edit: following this post I was able to gain access to phpMyadmin - [forum.wampserver.com]

Is there a way I can get localhost to point at my IP address?

yes . goto c:/windows/system32/driveers/etc/hosts

open the hosts file and make sure it HAS

127.0.0.1 localhost

and make sure it does NOT have

::localhost

adjust and save

PS -- the search is a little misleading,, when it says "your search is running"
click - "return the the search results" below it

Thanks for your reply.

I navigated to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

and found this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

-------------------------------------------------------

FYI: I did have to stop IIS to get WAMP to run. Could that have anything to do with this?

yes IIS by default would use localhost.

How did you disable IIS

I was getting the yellow indication on the WAMP icon until I went to the run command and used "services.msc" - I scrolled down to IIS Admin and right clicked the STOP option.

Now WAMP runs but localhost doesnt return the WAMP index page. When I type 127.0.0.1 it loads properly but the "127.0.0.1 is replaced with 10.225.136.236 -

In regards to the forum search: I failed to read the instructions under "your search is running" - it works fine just a bit confused.

After uninstalling IIS, WAMP no longer works.

I get a:

Network Error (dns_server_failure)

Your request could not be processed because an error occurred contacting the DNS server.
The DNS server may be temporarily unavailable, or there could be a network problem.

For assistance, contact your network support team.

---------------------------

The WAMP icon is 100% and when using 127.0.0.1 I get a:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

---------------------------

I will keep trying.

You have answered all my questions and I sure do appreciate your help... Happy Holidays, Marry Christmas and Festivus and Quanza and Hanuka!
