rewrite_module[500 INTERNAL ERROR]

Whenever I activate the rewrite_module on Apache, and wait for it to stop the server and restart it -every page I go to says "500 Internal Server Error Please contact the server administrator..."
How do I fix this problem?

Are you using an .htaccess file by any chance? That error appears, among other things, if there is a syntax error in the URL rewriting rules.

Check the apache log files and you may find some clues to why the error happens.
