Ok, I've read just about every post I can find on this. I had WAMP working several weeks ago. Then suddenly it stopped. Best guess reading here is that it was related to a recent Windows XP update. I've tried all the tricks that worked for others, to no avail...
I've tried uninstalling/deleting WAMP directories/deleting registry entries, restarting the computer and then reinstalling the most recent WAMP (2.0.c) (and yes, I've done this multiple times now).I've tried making some of the suggested changes to the various config files suggested to others. I'm still running up against this problem:
I get this error when I try to access phpMyAdmin phpMyAdmin - Error
Looks like it might be a windows path problem. I did notice that when I installed the WAMPSERVER, the path to MySQL was missing completely and I had to manually add it to run MySQL on the command line.
Found this on MySQL forum, maybe a solution.
SOLUTION: By placing a copy of php.ini file in the Apache bin directory, everything was solved. Apparently Apache is not very good at following windows PATH info on its own.
Sorry, was away and didn't have internet for a while, so I'm just catching up with the responses here.

Both are checked when I look at the extensions list, yes.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. There is nothing saying open new window on the error page. All I see on the page is the following:

Thanks for the tip, but that doesn't seem to work for me.
So I was having the same issues and I am new to this as well. So to get the phpadmin page to load I turned off the mysqli extension. I am not sure why this fixed it but it did, I still get an error messages stating that I don't have the mysquli extension installed.
