what is the purpose of 'put online'

hello every one, i want to know that is the purpose of 'put online or offline' the site browse on local machine with both, so why we check the put online option

if people are accessing outside of a local machine:

1. IF you put WAMPSERVER to offline and someone on another PC accesses it by your IP Address it comes up "Forbidden"

2. IF you put WAMPSERVER to online and someone on another PC accesses it by your IP Address it lets them in!

Off-line - Access only for computer that has wamp installed
On-line - Access through out LAN and worldwide w/ wan ip or domain

I am having the same problem, but I still get FORBIDDEN even if I put it online

Hello There.

I was stumped because I had configured httpd.conf and php.ini yet when I tried to access [myipaddress] I got the Forbidden message.

The answer as I found via this forum was to use the 'Put Online' HEY Presto it works fine...

My question is : What does the 'Put Online' actually do as I cannot see any change made to the config files?

Sorry if the question is a little banal but I am moving from apple to windows.

it does change code in the httpd.conf

$onlineText = "#   onlineoffline tag - don't remove
    Order Allow,Deny
    Allow from all";
    
$offlineText = "#   onlineoffline tag - don't remove
    Order Deny,Allow
    Deny from all
    Allow from 127.0.0.1";
