If thats True then your Host File has been changed accidentally Do to another program or virus. Your host File is located ..\windows\system32\Drivers\ect Right click on the File that Says "host" and open with "notepad"

It should look like the fellowing

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it doesn't then change it to look like the Code above.....
If your windows vista then.....
http://geekswithblogs.net/thibbard/archive/2006/12/13/ChangingYourHostsFileInVista.aspx";]

By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file.

1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

I can't access localhost, either. When I checked my hosts file it had been modified by Spybot which added over 8,000 domain names to the hosts file so as to block them by forcing my browser to look in vain for the domain name on localhost.

The format is 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net, with the 8,000 plus other entries filled with domains Spybot thinks are malware producers.

Otherwise, the very first entry in the host file is the normal 127.0.0.1 localhost.

Is that something that can cause wampserver not to function correctly?

this is not a spy bot!!!! this is a good anti spyware that u have. do not delete those 8000 entries,

if ur computer tries to go to those sites they are then forced to goto localhot which of course is not dangerous but all the sites on that list are dangerous. u must have a zone alarm or some other anti virus or firewall installed

I appreciate your comments on Spybot, Zone Alarm and anti-virus software, however, my question referred to my hosts file and whether the changes made by Spybot (the name of an app that detects malware) had any affect on my use of wampserver.

If my hosts file does not adversely affect wampserver, are there any other reasons localhost would not open when I click on the wampserver icon and then localhost.

The icon for wampserver appears to be about 2/3 yellow on 1/3 white.

goto apache , services , and see if start/resume is clickable or greyed out

do the same for mysql , serveices, start/resume
