Password protect a directory

Hello,

I have a need to password protect a few directories which contain images and scripts. However, because I am using a Windows box as the server I do not think I will be able to implement an .htaccess file because of the naming convention. Does anyone know how I can successfully password protect a directory on my site to the outside world?

Many thanks!

Hm - how can I name a file this in windows? Windows will not allow me to name a file as such because, in it's view, it doesn't have a proper filename...
