WAMP doesn't appear on my Windows XP, but does on my Vista machine

I've successfully installed WAMP on my Vista laptop computer, but four attempts have failed to get it working on my Windows XP desktop. Each time, nothing appears in my Firefox browser when I entered the address for localhost. Just an empty viewport in my browser.

At the end of the installation, I clicked on "Launch Wamp Server2 now" and nothing appeared.

Each time, before attempting a fresh installation, I've uninstalled WAMP with Add/Remove Programs and deleted the WAMP directory.

In desperation, I tried to install WAMP on my Windows XP notebook computer, with exactly the same result!!

I don't have IIS on either the desktop or the notebook Win XP machines. I am using AVG Free as my virus protection.

Should I give up and just use my Vista installation.

My only alternative, it seems, is to get someone from the local IT college to install Apache, PHP and MySQL separately for me for a fee.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: the AVG issue.

I'm using Free AVG on my successful Vista installation of WAMP without any problems.
