Help with databases

I'm pretty new to wamp and server side scripting in general...Recently I have been trying to install things like phpbb and such but I can't because I don't know the database settings. I'm developing a site but perfecting it locally first, therefore I'm on localhost port 8080. But I'm stuck on the rest. I haven't really messed with wamp at all so everything should be default...

So I need the following information and if I need to set something up could someone please give me a quick run through...

The Database Type - mySQL?
The Database server hostname or DSN - localhost?
Te Database server port - 8080
The Database name-
The Database username and Database password -

So I guess I'm asking if mySQL is the correct type and how do I setup a database or is there one already pre installed with wamp? I'm sorry if I sound like a noob...But thankyou in advance for all the help.

Before install phpbb, create a db account first, which include db_name, db_username, and db_password, then while installing phpbb, fill in the info as follows:

The Database Type: mySQL
The Database server hostname or DSN: localhost
Te Database server port: 3306
The Database name: db_name
The Database username: db_username
TheDatabase password: db_password

Hi,

The simplest way is to use phpMyAdmin, sign in as the default administrator or root user, create a new database and then set up a user and add localhost under the user as a host from where this user connects to the database, assigning all rights to this database/user/host combination.

You can also use the MySQL Administrator utility from MySQL to do that.

Last, but not least, you can run MySQL from the command line, if you have have set up an administrator password first. Not for the fainthearted, though.
