<?php tag needed?

Is there a way to make it so I don't need to add the "php" after the "<?" in a php file? Because when I don't, the server just displays text and messes everything up. I really need this because all the scripts I have (downloaded) don't have the "php" tag, which means I have to go though and ctr-f and replace them all. Thanks in advance.

By default, short_open_tag in c:/wamp/apache2/bin/php.ini is off; you can enable it through wamp tray icon, php settings
