problem with mysql service

mysql service doesn't run. When i turn it on, it automatically turns of.
When i go to phpmyadmin it shows

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

I use Win XP.
Pleas help.

do you have any other versions of mysql installed. you can only have one. you need to make sure you completely uninstall them before running wamp

my php admin works - but my mysql service does not

i have a pre-existing copy of mysql.

do I really need to kill it to use wamp??

I will if it absolutely required. but would prefer not to.

I am having this same problem, the WAMP MySQL service just shuts down after starting up.

As far as I can tell I have no other MYSQLs operating - but how can I be sure?

Although I do have a MySQL ODBC Connector (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/3.51.html) installed which I need for an app on my system.
