apache issues after upgrade -- update: fixed

i recently upgraded to v. 1.7.2
when i first did the upgrade it worked fine. after i restarted my computer apache will no longer start. i checked the apache error log and there is no sign of anything happening today. i have tried to start it several times.
update: i figured out what was going on here, and this may be helpfull for others.
i had IIs installed on my machine as well. for some reason my old version of wamp server still ran with it.
