Unable to load extensions

I have the latest wampserver (1.66) with the php 4.4.2 add-on running apache 2.059 with mysql 5.022 on windows XP (sp2).
After a few mysterious apache errors, i looked at my apache log and found this repeated:
PHP Warning: Unknown(): Unable to load dynamic library './extensions/php_gd2.dll' - The specified module could not be found.\r\n in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: Unknown(): Unable to load dynamic library './extensions/php_mbstring.dll' - The specified module could not be found.\r\n in Unknown on line 0
[Sun Dec 31 04:05:13 2006] [notice] Apache/2.0.59 (Win32) PHP/4.4.2 configured -- resuming normal operations
This is with wamp actively running php 4 (not php 5), and when i look at wampmenu->php settings->extensions, there are little arrows next to php_gd2 and php_mbstring. Both of these extensions exist at c:\wamp\php4\extensions, and both lines are enabled (the ';' removed) in the php4 ini.
What's causing this problem?
