strange apache problem

hi there

previously, i've been running apache v1.3 for many years without any problems
i've just formatted my computer, so i thought it'd be a good chance to update my servers
i tried installing apache v2.2 first, and that didnt seem to work
after a little research, it seems that it didnt like php5
so i downgraded to apache v2.0.57
this seems to suffer the same problem, where it would install, start/run fine, but when i try to load "[localhost"];, it would not work
the site would search and search, but no data would return
a friend suggested to use WAMP (v1.5.6.6), so i downloaded and installed it
WAMP seems to be suffering from the same problem

so i tried a bare install, np php, no mysql, just apache v2.0.57. no cigar.

i am currently running windows xp sp1 (5.1 - 2600) and using the NTFS file system on the hosting drive.

if you guy need any extra information, feel free to ask =)
if not, i guess i'm going back to v1.3 apache

not sure, thats what i was hoping to find out

nah, i dont have IIS installed
apache is the only thing using port 80
because ive tested it when apache is off and no application is using 80

ive tried changing it to port 8080, but that also didnt work
same problem, just on a different port
does it haev anything to do with the package i downloaded?
(no SSL)

might be since some people encounter problem w/ 1.6.6, try 1.6.5 here:

Also check to make sure no firewall or some other application lock your server, check my old post here, you might get some good tips:

yfastud, I just wanted to say that I'm trying 1.6.6 and so far, (knock on wood...) I have not ran into any of the problems the others have mentioned. (XP Pro SP2, NTFS, AMD XP, 1GB ram, SolTek mainboard)
