unable to connect to mysql database

Help me,
Whenever i am trying to connect to mysql database thru command prompt it is asking password.
The error whenever i am trying to interact with database thru phpmyadmin
the error is a follows
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in config.inc.php and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
