I have an old pc, PII 233MHz with 256MB ram. I'm runnig windows fundamentalls (http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/sa/benefits/fundamentals.mspx). This is a special version for older pc hardware. I have installed wamp, but my apache server won't start, in the system logs apache gets a start command (The wampapache service was successfully sent a start control.) and one second later it get's a stop command (The wampapache service entered the stopped state.). Port 80 is available. Can someone please help me and try to give me a solution for this?

Wamp and windows is the only what's running on my pc. I just formatted my pc.

Thanks

do you have any firewalls installed? do you use skype? your firewall may be blocking apache and port 80. if you have skype, it uses the same port as apache, so if skype is running, apache will not start.

Hi,

If Apache gets the stop command oen second after starting could it be an error in the httpd.conf file which is stopping Apache from starting successfully?

I seem to remember coming across something like this before with Apache.

I could be wrong.

Regards,

Andy.

Is 't allowed here to place my httpd.conf file online so that you can check it? Do you want to check it?

No i just installed wamp with standard settings. I've reinstalled my whole pc twice.

Thanks

httpd.conf:

#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:[httpd.apache.org]; for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache"winking smiley.
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
# at <URL:[httpd.apache.org]winking smiley;
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "c:/wamp/apache2"

#
# ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
# If unspecified (the default), the scoreboard will be stored in an
# anonymous shared memory segment, and will be unavailable to third-party
# applications.
# If specified, ensure that no two invocations of Apache share the same
# scoreboard file. The scoreboard file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
#
#ScoreBoardFile logs/apache_runtime_status

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
#
PidFile logs/httpd.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive On

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.
#
MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the
# same client on the same connection.
#
KeepAliveTimeout 15

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.

#
# ServerAdmin: Your address, where problems with the server should be
# e-mailed. This address appears on some server-generated pages, such
# as error documents. e.g. admin@your-domain.com
#
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost

#
# ServerName gives the name and port that the server uses to identify itself.
# This can often be determined automatically, but we recommend you specify
# it explicitly to prevent problems during startup.
#
# If this is not set to valid DNS name for your host, server-generated
# redirections will not work. See also the UseCanonicalName directive.
#
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# You will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.

# UseCanonicalName: Determines how Apache constructs self-referencing

# ServerName directive.

# AddHandler allows you to map certain file extensions to "handlers":

#ErrorDocument 404 "/cgi-bin/missing_handler.pl"
#ErrorDocument 402 [www.example.com]

# Putting this all together, we can internationalize error responses.
#
# We use Alias to redirect any /error/HTTP_<error>.html.var response to
# our collection of by-error message multi-language collections. We use
# includes to substitute the appropriate text.
#
# You can modify the messages' appearance without changing any of the
# default HTTP_<error>.html.var files by adding the line:
#
# Alias /error/include/ "/your/include/path/"
#
# which allows you to create your own set of files by starting with the
# @exp_errordir@/include/ files and copying them to /your/include/path/,
# even on a per-VirtualHost basis. The default include files will display
# your Apache version number and your ServerAdmin email address regardless
# of the setting of ServerSignature.
#
# The internationalized error documents require mod_alias, mod_include

# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem on my PC. I have successfully installed the same version of wamp on other PCs, but on mine, apache starts and then receive a stop.
I have this kind of behaviour only when running as a Windows service. If I launch Apache.exe from the command line, all works fine.

Any idea ?

make sure apaches port is not being blocked by another process like skype of iis. also make sure your firewall allows apache to run. if you have upgraded to windows xp with service pack 2 make sure windows firewall allows apache too.

As I said before, I have no problem with used ports or blocked ports as Apache runs well started from the command line.

The problem occurs only when started as a service.

Yes I do since I have some versions of EasyPHP.

I do not think that I did a standalone install of apache previously.

Do you think that some hidden parameters of a previous install can interfear ?

Hello everyone,

I just moved to a new laptop and after installing Wamp i'm not able to start Apache, although MySQL is running. I had Norton Firewall running and Skype too. So I closed these but still I'm unable to start Apache. During the installation I chose NOT to install as service.
The Start/Resume service, Stop service and Restart Service options on the tray icon menu are disabled, so I choose "Install Service" from the same menu, restart wampserver, still no luck.

In my log folder there's only a mysql_error.log file, i guess there should be an apache log too, shouldn't it? So it looks to me as if apache is never called, but this i just don't know.

If i try launching Apache from the command line, I get this message:

(OS 10048)Sólo se permite un uso de cada dirección de socket (protocolo/direccón de red/puerto) : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

(first line above roughly translated from spanish: Only one use of every socket address allowed (protocol/network address/port)

However, when i try to install as service from the tray icon menu, the popup command line window says "port 80 is available, install will proceed"

Please could you provide some help?

Thanks a lot for such a good tool, which I've used perfectly in the past.

are you using windows xp pro. 2000, or 2003. if so, then you need to make sure iis is not running. since iis is a webserver it uses the same port as apache. run [localhost] in your browser to see if any other server is currently running.

there have also been a few people having problems getting apache to work with norton. you should check out the noton support area for that. also, if you have upgraded windows to SP2 make sure you enable apache in the windows firewall.

also, here is how i have found which windows application is using port 80 and preventing Apache from starting:

1) type netstat -noa at command prompt. You get something like this:

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State PID
TCP 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3696
TCP 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 1464
TCP 0.0.0.0:105 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3696
TCP 0.0.0.0:106 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3696
TCP 0.0.0.0:110 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3696
TCP 0.0.0.0:135 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 1256
TCP 0.0.0.0:143 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3696
TCP 0.0.0.0:443 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 1464
TCP 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 4
TCP 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 3584
TCP 0.0.0.0:60643 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 1464
TCP 127.0.0.1:1026 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING 1656

Note which PID corresponds to port number 80 (second line above, it is number 1464)

2) to find out what that PID is so you can disable it, run a free utility pslist.exe from the command line. you can download it from www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsList.html . You get something like this:

PsList 1.26 - Process Information Lister
Copyright (C) 1999-2004 Mark Russinovich

Process information for THINKPAD:

pslist 2428 13 2 79 848 0:00:00.040 0:00:00.030

in this example above the the offending application was skype, so shut it down, or uninstall it. you said in your post that you shut down skype, so yours will look different, but at least you can now find out what is keeping you from being able to start apache.

Cool! that worked perfectly.
I had a cheesy piece of software running in background (a bandwidth usage monitor).
I needed to reinstall wampserver as just rebooting it didn't work, but that's fine as previous installation was still clean.

thanks a lot, this little pslist will be useful in many other situations
