Hi,

I've installed WAMP on my pc with "WINDOWS FUNDAMENTALS for legacy PC's", but the apache service won't start. I don't now what the problem is. Can it be my hardware. I have only a virusscan and wamp runnig. I have also already tried to change the port in httpd.conf but apache still won't start! When I choose test port 80 in wamp, it says that this port is in use by another application. PLEASE HELP ME!

Here's my apache error log:

if you have skype, it uses the same port as apache, so if skype is running, apache will not start.

uninstall wamp completely --> reboot the computer --> turn off the IIS service /Start/Control Panels/ Adminitrative Tools/ Services/ ... World Wide Web has to be off as well as IIS Admin Service ... it will prompt you if you want to FTP and SMTP service to be off, Click Yes.
2) Start/ Control Panels/ Adminitrative Tools/ Internet Service Manager/ click to expand your local computer to your left/ select Default Web Site/ right click and Stop.

And now your are good to install wamp again,
Congrats !!!
everything should be working fine.

The problem is there are No NULL devices in Windows Fundamentals For Legacy PCs,
I am writing a patch but in the meantime, there is no work around.

NULL.SYS is a device driver that CygWin and Apache and other programs require in order to pass NUL statements.

Ordinarily the Null Device is a driver that is registered on installation of XP,
typically it resides in c:\window\system32\drivers\null.sys

Copying the file from another OS will not correct the situation, as Windows is
unaware it should load the device driver.

The problem on creating a INF and CAT to install NULL on WFLP, is that
you get a Windows File Redistribution error, because the file is considered a part
of an OS that is not transferrable to another OS. (error 22.9.8 - ref: Windows XP/2003 File Redistribution Violation)

A workaround would be to install an Open Source and created from scratch
NULL.SYS file that would perform like the original NULL device driver.

I am looking into creating this solution, in the meantime I would suggest
either running WAMP on a XP machine, or a Virtual Machine, or Bootable CD
type solution.

If/When I get my patch written, I will post an update and download link to share.

I am looking into code from the ReactOS project, I believe they have something that
could be adapted for this use.

Fast forward to 2010!
This is exactly my problem. Has a workaround been developed to solve this issue? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks so much.

Snap! Apache was working fine until I just updated it with the latest download (2.2.11) now Apache doesn't load (everything else is the same as before the upgrade)

If a patch is still not available, I will have to change my OS from Windos fundamentals to XP. I'd rather not as my computer is pretty old, but Apache is very important to to me.

The problem with running Apache under Windows XP fundamentals is that Microsoft disabled the null.sys driver that is required. There is a solution to fix that that can be found at: [www.cynosurex.com]
