newb question - can't connect to http://ipaddress

hi all,
I just installed WAMP, according to the program everythings running. I do NOT have a router, but do have a firewall on, and have port 80 allowed. I CAN accses [localhost], but I cannot access [myIPaddress] where "myIPaddress" is my actual IP address that I found by going to [whatismyipaddress.com]. I even tried to take the firewall down all together, but still couldn't access it. And yes, i did select "put online."

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure this is just a stupid thing.

Thanks in advance,
bj

Yes, I think it's wrong cause you should try the ip of the computer installed wamp instead your web ip, and correct me if I'm wrong because now I already own a domain, your web ip only work when you have dns service, then you can use your web ip instead domain name.
Hope this help

cyberspatium, it already is in online mode. It's weird because the server interface says its online and all the services are running.

yfastud, I heard you only need DNS when you have a domain name, because DNS translates your website address (www.mysite.com) to an ip address (xxx.xxx....). In my case, I do not have a website domain name, but I believe I should still be able to access my server using an ip.

Any thoughts?

I guess I didnt understand the first time. Would you mind explaining how to find out the ip of the computer that has wamp, and how to find the web ip?

You've already got your web ip through [whatismyipaddress.com]. With the other, the basic step, I guess you've already knew, is to use command prompt ipconfig/all on your unit that has wamp. Also, if you have sp2, remember to disable firewall from windows.

thanks. ipconfig/all shows 192.168.1.45 as my ip address which works when I type in [192.168.1.45] on the computer which runs wamp, but not on other computers. I thought was 192.168... denotes a lan ip, but we don't have a router so this confuses me. ipconfig/all only shows 192.168... and 255.255... addresses which I thought were all lan ips. Is there a way to access the web server from other computers?

does the firewall need to be taken down completely? because I already have port 80 open.

OK, let me make it clear.

Firewall from sp2 is different from third party such as Norton or McAfee, so even you already enable port 80 of third party firewall but did not disable firewall from sp2, it still prevents accessible.

Other computers must be in your local network to access; otherwise, you need dns to access worlwide, and yes, websites is accessible woldwide using web ip when having dns service because I used that method before until Yahoo have domain name on sale for $3/yr up to 5yrs.

Disable firewall from windows sp2, then use third party firewall with port 80 enable, one firewall is more than enough already. Remember, other computers must be in the same local network with wamp unit since you don't have router, so I'm not sure how you can have all computers in the same network though.

I have Windows XP sp2 w/ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite and do not have any problems. there have been a few previous posts with people having problems getting wamp to work with norton.

booleanjulian, I too have Comcast highspeed internet. I use my web ip address to connect to WAMP. if you are not on a network, then you do not need to worry about a router. Just remember to check your ip address every now and then, Comcast changes it about every 2 or 3 months. or, an easier way is to use a dynamic ip service to keep track of your ip address for you.
[]

just a note to anyone who uses AOL, your ip address changes every time you sign in to AOL. so you need to use a dynamic ip or dynamic dns service to make your wamp server accessible by others.

I prefer everydns.net myself, but you need to have some experience using dynamic dns to use it. however, zoneedit.com is probably the easiest to use because it has tons of tutorials and guides on setting up and using dynamic dns.

oh, so wait, I don't need to have registered a domain?

computers outside my LAN should be able to connect to my server by entering [myipaddress] or [myaddress] ?

if you do not have a domain name, use dynamic ip service. if you have a domian name use dynamic dns service.

both [myipaddress] and [myipaddress] will work, but the easiest is just to use [myipaddress]

is a dynamic ip service the same thing as Dynamic DNS - The free dynamic DNS (DDNS) service such as the one provided by DynDNS.com? or something different?

dynamic ip services is for ip addresses, dynamic dns is for domain names.
