mysql server problem

I've installed everything and it worked quite nicely for a few days, but now I can't seem to connect to mysql server. phpmyadmin gives me a

"Error

MySQL said: Documentation
#2003 - The server is not responding "

and the preinstalled wamp homepage says:

MySQL version :
MySQL not launched or bad phpmyadmin config

I've reinstalled mysql service a couple times, and even reinstalled the whole package, but still nothing. The service always says it is running, and I can start/stop it without any errors, but cannot connect to it with and scripts. I've not changed any configurations or passwords in either mysql or phpmyadmin config file.

I've also tried to connect to the server through wamp's menu "MySQL Console" and it does ask me for a password, however I've never set one up and cannot find any documentation on what the default one is. If I leave the password blank and hit ENTER the console just shuts down.

Any ideas on a resolution will be grately appriciated as I really love this product, especially how easy it makes it to get a WAMP system set up.

Thanks in advance.
