since i got no takers i'll reply to my own query ... phpmyadmin is not secure and installing it with wamp will open you up to attack.

no cause you can only open phpmyadmin from inside the network but if you restrict your students and anyone apart from the system admin from going to the ip of the server then you are fine but you can make it so you have to login to phpmyadmin to look and modify the database
