ah solved it myself, used the OLD_PASSWORD ('newpassword') function, works like a charm pp

Ah, solved the issue, by switching to php 4.2.2 pp

in order to solve my other issues around php 5 and php 4, i loaded the extension for php 4.2.2 the following message came when entering phpMyAdmin MySQL said: Documentation #1251 - Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client it suggests to make changes in the config.inc.php file however I cannot find this file. it's not in the phpmyadmin

No error messages, in fact the file nicely continues with the html that comes after this php piece. the thing is that nothing ends up in the mysql dbase. I'm guessing something might be up with either the mysql statement or with the INSERT command. the strange thing is that the identical script on the live server works fine. thanks for your help PP
