I attempted to install WAMP on a USB for the very same reasons you raised but it didn't work. Seems WAMP must be on top level directory of a host computer.

Sorry for not providing info. I believe what happened was a problem with cached errors. It was my second install of WAMP Server and I may have made errors. When I uninstalled WAMP, the problem didn't go away because of the password/setting caching going on. I resolved the problem by uninstalling, cleaning out cookies and caches, even deleting all SQL files made during my earlier installs, Basical

Ran into error 1045. Researched many suggestions but none worked. Uninstalled WAMP, deleted all directories to start clean but same problem persisted. Even went so far as to delete all recently altered files for that day relevant to WAMP and mysql. Problem persisted. It was as if there was a file somewhere that kept filling in password field on phpmyadmin UI. May have to look for alternative to W
