Excellent Steve - many thanks. The semi-colon was already removed from the php.ini accessible through the WAMP interface but it was still present in c:\wamp\bin\php\phpX.X.X\php.ini. When I removed it, the PHP script ran just fine.

To recap, I am using WampServer 2.1e 32bit on Win7 with Apache 2.2.17 but with PHP 5.2.6 to align with my hosting company. Now trying to run some existing programs, I have hit a curl error. I grabbed 2.1e off sourceforge, uninstalled wamp, installed 2.1, added PHP 5.2.6 and now it all works. Thanks for your help. Very neat system - if only there were more of the gotchas listed on the FAQ page...

Thanks Steve So what do I have to do? Uninstall WampServer 2.2 and install WampServer 2.1e 32bit? If so, how do I get hold of WampServer 2.1e 32bit because I don't see any page containing old versions? Or do I just have to install an extension of an old version of Apache? If so, which version is definitely VC6?

I have got WAMP working by uninstalling my standalone versions of Apache and PHP but I can't use PHP 5.3 as my hosting company are still using old MYSQL passwords. So I downloaded the 5.2.6 PHP "extension" and installed it but the WAMP logo stayed orange when I switched to it. I couldn't see any error message or any error log. So I tried 5.2.11. OK, I uninstalled Apache, uninstalled PHP and then reinstalled WAMP and this time it works. Maybe it's time to look again at those three FAQs and think if a few need to be added.

I just installed the latest version of WAMP. Previously I had my onw installs in MySQL, PHP and Apache but I hear many good things about WAMP.
