Hi there,

I am using wampserver 2.5 on Windows 8.

One fine day, the W icon got stuck in Orange and will not turn Green.

I have tried most of the suggestions stated above but is still does not work.

I could not follow all suggestions as I could not find some files / links stated above.

Can somebody help and tell me what else I can do to resolve this issue?

Cheers

Hi freshbie

Lets start at the beginning :-

If the wampmanager icon is not GREEN then one of the services ( Apache(wampapache)/MySQL(wampmysqld) ) has not started properly.

How to tell which service is not running if the wampmanager icon is orange.

Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> Apache -> Service
If the Start/Resume service menu is Green then Apache IS NOT running.

Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> MySQL -> Service
If the Start/Resume service menu is Green then MySQL IS NOT running.

If Apache is the service that is not running it is normally, but not always, because something else has captured port 80.

Now do,
Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> Apache -> Service -> Test port 80
This will launch a command window and display some information about what, if anything is using port 80.

Ok when MySQL wont start it is usually 1 of 2 reasons so we will start with those.

1. Are you running another MySQL Server? Some dev tools sometimes come with one installed in the background.

The MySQL server that comes with WAMPServer has the service name 'wampmysqld' or 'wampmysqld64', check the services snapin to see if you have one that has a service name of 'MYSQL' that means you have another one running.

2. There is a rouge my.ini or my.cnf file on your system. Do a search of C: for any file with either of those names. If you find any that are NOT in the '\wamp\....' folder structure somewhere then delete them.

Then try starting WAMPServers MySQL again.

Please let me know which one it was, or if it was neither we can look a little closer.

Press the start button.

In the filed containing 'Search programs and file' enter 'Services'

The Services snapin should then show in the Programs list with a little cog beside it.

Click it.

Hi RiggsFolly,

I tried step 2 and found 2 files while searching for my.ini
Both are inside wamp folder.

C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.17

C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.6.17

No file was found while searching for my.cnf

Hi RiggsFolly,

I tried starting the wampmysqld service from the Services (Local), but it did not work.

It is showing an Error box;

Windows could not start the wampmysqld service on Local Computer.

Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

I am not sure you are up to Web Development yet.

Hear is how to use search for a file in Windows 8: [windows.microsoft.com]

MySQL writes an error log, you get to it via the wampmanager icon in the system tray

wampmanager -> MySQL -> MySQL log

If that is no use or empty then it also writes errors to the 'Windows Event Viewer' in the left panel select Windows Logs and then below that Application.

Look for messages from MYSQL

Hi RiggsFolly,

You are right. I am primarily using wamp to back up my websites.

I have a very important website backup that I need to retrieve but cannot get wamp to start.

I have checked through the whole log but there isn't any messages from MYSQL.

Looks like we are going to have to go hands-on with this one.

Install TeamViewer and I will troubleshoot for you.

Install TV, then run it.

Send me a Private Message containing the TV ID and PASSWORD so I can connect.
Leave TV running as it will change the password each time you restart it.

I am on UK time (GMT) and am normally available 09:00 - 16:00 and normally later into the evening.

Hi RiggsFolly,

Thank you for guiding me all the way through.

I managed to delete away 1 of the folder for 1 of the backup site that I have in the local host and managed to get the wampserver to run again.

Really appreciate your patience with me all this while and guiding me step by step to get it fixed.

You are a good adviser.
