Hi,

Now that I have Wamp going and it is terrific, I it seems I need to also setup a Linux box so I can test Suphp and Suhosin.

What is the best setup for this please.

Is there a setup similar to wamp where Apache, php, mySQL, etc etc come with an interface similar to cpanel for non lInux nerds like me?

Some say Centos and others say others. Can I get some guidance please?

Thanks

oz :-)

If you're using Linux you will be better off installing Apache, PHP and MySQL via your linux distros package repositories. SuPHP and SuHosin are usually installed automatically.

I do not recommend you to try XAMPP or any other all in one package for linux.

CentOS is the prefered OS for a Server. However you can use any linux distro of your choice.

Thank for the tips guys. After looking around I am leaning towards Mepis or Ubuntu however still undecided. Xampp seemed to be the way to go as ell.

Looked at Webmin however it looks like it requires some command line stuff. At my age (started in 1976 with cp/m then dos), I don't wish to start having to learn that as it is too time consuming. Just need somehting a little easier.

Why do you suggest I do not use xampp and install via the distro. Any specific reason or is this just your own
preference?

I like to know who'se got the life raft before I jump in the deep!!

Thanks again..

the distos are jsut as easy as xampp to install..

the only issue is- xammp is similar to wamp - some sort of menu and gui to control it

the distro will just be 3 seperate apps all links with the distro program but no GUI

Oh I see.

As an MS os guy for some years now I am used to a graphic interface and even love our Cpanel and WHM on our hosted Linux servers so as close as I can get to that would just be great for me at this time of my life!

I have Mepis up and running now still only from the disc, however it looks and feels good, so will install it on a box and see how we go.

I guess I'll give Xampp a go too and see how we do. I can always revert back to the distros.

I appreciate your time guys, it takes the loneliness out of being a computer geek!!

Yes I have looked at the cost..

Out of my league. I'd rather support the guys who go with open source anyway.

Thanks

I've been using Ubuntu for couple years and it's good; just download and install Ubuntu Server not Ubuntu Desktop, then enable GUI, very easy since Ubuntu Server already have Apache, MySQL and PHP installed and after enable GUI, it will look similar to Win, of course not completely but you know what I meant winking smiley
