PHP My Admin Not Working

Hi I am a new Wamp user. I just installed it today. I rebooted the PC, Running XP. All Services Started,

localhost/phpmyadmin gives me this error:

#2006 - MySQL server has gone away
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

I am simply trying to setup a database for wampserver to use.please advise what I should do. Thanks.

since wamp come w/ mysql, uninstall any other mysql, search and delete any my.ini file outside wamp folder

Thanks for your reply but it doesn't work.

wamp's mysql is the only one installed, and the only my.ini is from wamp.

Since the MySQL thing is obviously not working very well, and no one seems to be able to figure out what's wrong, what do you think about this:

Use MS Excel as a database for PHP. I have heard of it being done before but I don't know how. Is there a link somewhere that describes it in detail?

It's obvious I'm a web developer and not a server guy!
