mysqld does not start (vista home)

Hi again, all --

So, aside from my "data directory" question in my other post, I have a real problem. After installation (yes, even a vanilla :-) installation with no tricks) mysqld will not start. There is, AFAICT, no log output or anything else. I'm completely stumped.

Any tips?

TIA again & HAND

You mentioned about other post, did you have full backup before editing?

Nah; I wasn't worried because I don't yet have any content :-)

Interestingly, after the fifth (5th) time I've installed (with unintalls between), it now comes up just fine. I'm confused.

1 - install in c:\program files\wamp ; play with data directories ; screw it all up :-)

2 - install in c:\program files\wamp ; no playing ; still broken

3 - install in c:\wamp ; no playing ; still broken

4 - install in c:\program files\wamp again ; no playing ; lots of poking around and manual starting ; broken

After this uninstall I also completely wiped c:\program files\wamp and c:\wamp

5 - install in c:\program files\wamp ; it works ; auto start in services seems happy

The only thing I haven't done is reboot and make sure it all comes up, but I have no reason to suspect that it won't. I can only figure that some data directory playing (I originally wanted my www pages in c:\Users\Public\wamp\www and my mysql data in c:\Users\Public\wamp\mysql) was left over after uninstall which continued to confuse wamp.

I'd still like to know how to change the data directories :-) but at least it is up and running now.

Thanks again & HAND

For database, copy the associated folder in Backups/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.0.xx/data to overwrite that same folder name in C:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.0.xx/data folder
Note: Remember, this option only work if and only if you've already set your MySQL storage type to MyISAM
It seems you didn't read the whole instruction, or even didn't even bother to take a look at it at all, and that's why you didn't get the idea

Hi, yfastud --

[Shouldn't this message be under the "data directories elsewhere" thread?]

Actually, I read the entire page and didn't see anything on how to locate my data directory elsewhere.

The snippet you have posted above is under "RESTORES", which also doesn't help all that much because restoration is restoration no matter where the files are and, you'll recall, what I want is to locate the data files conveniently and separately from the "engine" files.

I pretty much tuned out the doc when it said "Copy the whole folder WAMP" and then "Google for some free Sync program"; that's why I said I didn't want to have to keep 150+ MB of infrastructure in sync.

Now, if I have missed some tip here that says "here's what you do to have wmap (or mysql) look in a completely different tree for the mysql data files", then I would very much appreciate a clear pointer to that tip.

Thanks again & HAND

You just don't get it, all db's are inside C:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.0.xx/data folder, but you can only use "copy& paste" w/ MyISAM storage type, and since you can copy and & paste, free Sync program comes in handy for both db's and websites; otherwise, get some paid program that can backup db for you

I must respectfully state that you don't get it. I know where the data files are now, and I don't like that location. Why can I not modify the mysql configuration to put the data folder somewhere else so that the DBs are there in the first place?

I accept that there is no integrated way to change the data locations under WAMPserver, and I gather that one is not expected any time soon. Fine. I'll either live with editing files in what should be a static tree and deal with the backup issues that come with that or hack it manually again..

He he... he he... ;-) I like that sentence
As mentioned, if don't use myisam, it's no use to backup db folder
Anyway, if like to play w/ it, below is the line used to setup db location in mysql config file my.ini in folder C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.0.xx

#Path to the database root
datadir=c:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.0.51a/data
