Access a different computer's localhost over a network?
Posted by: sbarry50 (---.ga.at.cox.net)

I recently posted a thread about my computer suddenly stopped accessing localhost for testing out a wordpress blog I'm developing. I was able to get ahold of a much newer computer running Vista that I was able to get this working on. However, with the Vista machine I can't test the site out in IE6.

I've heard of others running Wamp on one computer and doing the testing on a different computer over a network. That seems to be my best bet considering the computer that has IE6 is the one having the problems with Wamp.

To clarify, I plan on mainly working on the Vista machine and periodically jumping over to the old machine to see how it looks in IE6. My question is if this is possible and how would I do it.

Thank you for any help.

No matter it's xp or vista, it will work; for example, I have 3 desktops all has wamp: Vista Business, XP Pro, XP Home, 2 laptops: Vista Premium, Vista Basic and they can cross access w/o any problem. Check Setup Virtual Host and LAN&Worldwide Access guides on my personal websites

yfastud,

I went through your guides and did everything exactly like you said and I cannot get it to work. Like i mentioned before I'm using this for wordpress. On the machine running wamp, I have the wordpress folder in the C:\wamp\www folder. According to your guide I now have three additional folders labeled my_domain, sub1, and sub2.

On my local machine if I type [localhost], my test blog appears. If I type [localhost], my wp dashboard appears. If I type in [mydomain], it redirects me to [localhost] and my test blog appears. If I type in [mydomain], I get a 404 not found error. I'm assuming this is how it's supposed to work, correct?

Here's my problem. When I go to either computer 2 or 3 (I did reconfigure the hosts file in each of these) and type in [mydomain] I get a Index of directory page that has my logs file listed. To access my test blog, am I supposed to use [mydomain]? When I did this, I would get a 404 not found error page. I also tried [localhost] and got a "Internet Explorer cannot display the website" page.

I tried putting the wordpress folder into the my_domain folder and typed [mydomain] and got the same cannot display pages. I don't know how to get this to work.

Here is the contents of the error.log file in the mydomain folder:

www -> wordpress, mmaconvert, sub1, sub2, logs (folders)

wordpress -> all the files and folders extracted from the wp download .zip
mmaconvert-> logs
sub1 -> logs
sub2 -> logs

Assuming you mean the WIndows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, its contents are

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 mmaconvert
127.0.0.1 sub1
127.0.0.1 sub2

Well, that didn't work either. I replied back to your email but I figured I would post this here too just in case.

Using these settings you emailed this is what I get when I type:

Machine running wamp
[localhost] - my test blog appears
[mmaconvert] - index of page with just logs folder as content
[wp] - redirects to [localhost] (wampserver homepage)
[wp] - 404 not found

Networked Computer
[localhost] - page cannot be displayed
[mmaconvert] - index of page with just logs folder as content
[wp] - page cannot be displayed
[wp] - 404 not found

Should these be the correct results from what I am typing?
Should I be typing something else to access it?

Here are the error logs from the mmaconvert folder for this trial:

At the end of your email you said www.mmaconvert.com, mmaconvert.com, and wp.mmaconvert.com only would work if I setup dns. Is that necessary?

I don't know how to do that. I have registered that site and have it hosted although its just the default wp blog at the moment, but I'm assuming thats not what you were talking about.

First thing first, are they all working locally?

For dns, you have to check your host if they offer free dns; most hosting do, but not all. If they do, then ask them how to setup dns for subdomain(s)

About subdomain(s), the clear examples are my websites, which does NOT like others, because they're all subdomaiins except the main page is the main domain, so when you click on any menu tab, you will see the subdomain show up in the url

It's not necessary to setup subdomain(s), but the good thing is when the main site down, all others still work; however, if you don't setup subdomain(s), when the main site down, all the links go w/ it will die too

For example, I'm using guides.jlbn.net instead jlbn.net/guides, so when jlbn.net is down, jlbn.net/guides is down too, but guides.jlbn.net is still working, got it?

To answer your first question, no. Nothing that the virtual host is supposed to do is working locally. I was asking if setting up dns was necessary to get the virtual host working locally.

All I care about is working on my site on the computer with Wamp and periodically using the other computer with IE6 to check to see how it looks in that particular browser. If I had IE6 on the computer with wamp I wouldn't even be going through this but you apparently cannot install IE6 on Vista.

If dns is not necessary for that scenario to work, then I'm not even going to think about setting up dns.

If I understood you correctly in your email, I should just have to type either:

[localhost]
[mmaconvert]
[wp]

into the non-wamp computer and my site should appear in the browser correct?

That's not working. Should I be typing in something else?

Well, did you see your wordpress when you type wp (or whatever word you're using in your vhost file) in the computer that has wamp installed?

If I type [wp] in the wamp computer, it redirects me to [localhost] which is the wamp server configuration page. There is a link to the wordpress folder in the middle of the page, which when I click on it, my test blog appears and the browser address says [localhost].

My problem is when I do the same on the networked computer, I get The page cannot be displayed.

My LAN IP for the wamp comp is 192.168.1.105. Therefore, in the non wamp machine I changed the hosts file to say:

192.168.1.105 localhost
192.168.1.105 mmaconvert
192.168.1.105 wp

I believe that is correct.

If I type [wp] in the wamp computer, it redirects me to [localhost] which is the wamp server configuration page. There is a link to the wordpress folder in the middle of the page, which when I click on it, my test blog appears and the browser address says [localhost].
You must do something wrong since it should NOT redirect to localhost then having the link to wordpress; You know, a lot of other people successful w/ my guides and here is 1 of them:

[forum.wampserver.com]

When not accessible from other computers, you have to make sure to already enable port 80 in all firewalls in all computers, not only the computer that has wamp installed

I may have made a small step forward.

In wp's admin panel under Option-> General, there are two options for the url of the blog.

There is Wordpress address (root folder where blog is stored). This was set to [localhost].

There is also blog address, which you can specify if you want the blog homepage to be different than the directory you installed wordpress. This was also set to [localhost]. I changed this to [wp] and on the non wamp computer when I type in [wp] my blog appears but without the stylesheet loaded. I tried changing the way I link the stylesheet in my index.php file but couldn't get it to work. The side effect to this now is I can no longer view the blog on the wamp computer
