MySQL console "crashes"

Hi
New to WAMP so apologies if this is obvious.
I've just installed wamp. When I go to the MySQL console I get a request for a password, my understanding is that by default it doesn't have one. If I press enter the MySQL console crashes. If I try to enter any text at all followed by enter, MySQL console crashes.
Can anyone help?

What happen when you go to phpmyadmin?
