You might need to enable the mysql extension; start wamp and left click on the wamp system tray icon -> php settings -> php extensions -> php_mysql -> restart wamp

Are you using win2k or win2k3? If yes, some people have issue w/ it and it seems they have a workaround solution, so search for win2k or win2k3

I'm having the same issue on one installation of WAMP5 (on winXP, using WAMP v1.7.3). Looking into the Apache log reveals that the first function call that uses the mysql extension fails.

If you edited anything recently, undo it 1 by 1 to find out the cause.

I've recently just installed 1.7.3 on xp machine and already upgraded mysql 5 to 6 and php 5 to 6, and so far the machine still run w/o any problem. Different people, of course, have different idea, but for me to run a server, there is nothing else on this machine except related software for server such as 3 main things: windows xp sp2, norton 360, and wamp 1.7.3, plus some add-ons such as SSL, MS SQL express, ASP.net, JSP, Ruby on Rail, awstat, imagemagick... even ftp server and mail server were put in a different machines.

So if you can't find out the cause, I suggest that you should uninstall it and before re-install it, make sure to clean up all related apache, mysql, and php, including the current (wampapache, wampmysql) and might be some previous installation, in BOTH windows and registry. The problem is some people might already tried other package before installing this wamp, and they thought that uninstalling the previous will more than fine but it's actually not, since it still might leave some registries which might prevent this wamp to work properly.

OK, solved it... Not only were there remnants of the previously-installed version of WAMP, there was a separate installation of PHP!! ... client's computer...ugh.

So, I uninstalled WAMP again, then uninstalled the standalone version PHP. Then, I manually deleted the c:/wamp folder, then deleted c:/program files/php, then searched for any file with PHP and removed the related ones. Then I did the same to the registry (the entry for php.ini was still there!). Then, I cleaned the computer and registry with CCleaner (I love that prog!), then rebooted (it is Windows, after all).

When I installed after that thorough cleaning, it worked fine. My guess is that it was that registry entry that stayed after uninstalling WAMP and PHP.
