I just installed WAMP and am showing all services running but get this error message when trying to access phpmyadmin:

MySQL said: Documentation
#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

I'm just missing something simple here I know, but I would appreciate any pointers in the right direction,

You have to setup password in TWO PLACES, check Setup Password section on my site

getting the same thing ... And yeah I read your how to setup password in 2 palces but I can't even access phpmyadmin in the 1st place ... and I tried mysql console to no avail

First thing first, you can only setup password when all services running, and in your case, it seems mysql is not running at all, so make sure that you don't have anything else such as previous installed mysql, so on that use the same port. By the way, how did you access mysql console?

from taskbar .. anyway it worked ... 10x a billion ... Now how to upgrade MySQL to latest version ?

You mean to upgrade to mysql 6 and php 6 like mine?
