Conflict / Service Status / MySQL

Conflicting service status reports for MySQL. PHPmyadmin shows it as Started (“This MySQL server has been running for 0 days, 1 hours, 16 minutes…”), but WAMP5 shows it as not running – and clicking on Start/Resume Service has no effect.

I have reinstalled WAMP5 and restarted computer, but that has not helped.

I have WAMP5 1.7.3. ; XP Pro SP2; PHP 5.2.45; MySQL-essential-5.0.45; (Apache)
httpd-2.2.6-win32-src-r2

neglected to add that I had downloaded and installed MySQL a day before I downloaded and installed WAMP5, and I had to uninstall and reinstall it several times before getting PHPmyadmin to work .. also, I am doing all this in order to be able to use Joomla on localhost
