Strange thing with MySQL

This one is quite strange. Wondering what you guys think of this and how it happened. Virus maybe?

I had to shutdown my laptop due to a power outage today. When I started it back up, Apache was starting, but MySQL was not. Then I tried to start the service and kept getting the following error:

Could not execute menu item (internal error)
[Exception] Could not execute run action:
The system cannot find specified path

I searched here and couldn't find the answer, so I was going to reinstall. As I was looking through the mysql directory I noticed that the mysqld-nt.exe file name was showing as mysqld-nt.exe~. Notice the "~" at the end. I removed the "~" and the MySQL service started without a problem.

Any ideas on how this might have happened?
