Check to make sure port 80 is for apache (ie. wamp), not others

Have fun,

make sure no other process is using port 80 (like another webserver, skype, etc) which apache needs to be free in order to start. so, if you have windows server or windows xp professional, make sure iis is not running.

to test port 80:
left click on the wamp tray icon -> apche -> test port 80

ok, I have done that before (wamp icon --> apache --> test port 80) and it came up with this:

"Your port 80 is not actually used" - Is that a good thing or not?

Also, how do I see what programs use what ports?

Thanks for your help so far :p

********EDIT*********
I have just completly un-installed (inc deleting all the old folders) and re-installed wamp - and now it works. (Although i backed up the fiels, i forgot to back up the databases ;'( lol)

Thanks Guys

Michael

hi ,

i'm a newbie and i have installed winamp5 1.7.0.
I am also facing the same problem "your port 80 is not actually used".
I have uninstalled, deleted the older folders but i still face the problem.
I would like to know how to correct this problem and also as to where i can
find where the port numbers are assigned.

make sure you dont have any other versions of apache installed on your computer. also make sure no other webserver is running like iis or a program like skype that uses the same port as apache. if that port is being used, apache will not start.

you can also test port 80:
stat wamp -> left click on the wamp tray icon menu -> apache -> test port 80

The WAMP User Manual is really well done, CyberSpatium, but I still can get Apache to run. It ran for me yesterday when I set it up (on Win XP w SP2). When I restarted WAMP today, though, no Apache. I've tried all the solutions you suggest in the manual, and it _still_ won't run. Changing to port 81 didn't seem to make any difference, and the WAMP menus (or whatever its called) in the system tray never showed Apache running even after changing to port 81 and restarting Apache, or stopping and starting Apache (which I tried, even though there wasn't anything to stop).

I've tried restarting the computer, too. I could, as Michael did, reinstall WAMP, but am I going to have the same problem every time I try to restart it? Help, please!

What I did, was un-install the older version, and re-install the new 1 - because on the website it said I could just install over the old 1 - but that didnt work. So i un-installed the old 1 (and deleted the whole folder from the C: - but i backed up the project files 1st) and then i installed the new 1, and it now works fine

the 1.7.0 is not meant to upgrade over the 1.6.6

the server versions are incompatible!

Please please please! uninstall wamp after backing everyhting up BEFORE installing the 1.7.0 version

ROMS even says this on the wamp homepage....
thanx

Only problem with these suggestions is that I didn't have an older version. The first and only WAMP5 version I installed was/is 1.7.0. sad smiley

I read elsewhere on this forum that maybe there's something tricky with the virtual host business. Should I be looking at something there?
