apache service won't start

I just installed WAMP5 Version 1.7.0, but when it starts, the tray icon only says 1 of 2 services running.
I tried to start apache, but nothing happened.
I ran ApacheMonitor and tried to start it from there, but it says the requested operation has failed.
I tried starting it from services, but it says it started then stopped.
I've done the test port 80 thing, all clear, so have run out of options.

Did you change any settings in wamp after you installed it. Like in the htaccess and other settings?

make sure you do not have any other webservers running, like other versions of apache or iis. also, make sure skype is not running, it uses the same port as webservers (port 80). if that port is being used by another program, apache will not start.

No settings have been changed. This is just installed (in fact, reinstalled, since my last post). I've never had IIS installed. Had apache, but that was uninstalled before I installed wamp. As I said, port 80 is clear.

i have that same problem when using the php 4 addon. apache won't start in php 4 but works fine in php 5. how do i get it to work in php 4?
