WampServer

Hi, my WAMP is running great. But i have a little cosmetic problem. When i put my front page directly in the root all my Swedish characters turn into black squares with a question mark. But when i load it up in a directory it works fine. How come? and is it solvable? I have WAMP running in Swedish...

I also wonder, how do i turn off the FTP ..thing. I wont want the option so people can "browse" my site if i for example don't got a front page in root you get that silly white page with the directory listing and stuff? how do i protect\disable that feat. I don't dare to mess with the apache modules without some help firest, for i don't know what things i might mess up.
