No functionality on Drupal test site

I have installed WAMP and have all services running. I am building a drupal site that I have copied into the www folder under wamp/ and can get the index page to run when I type in [localhost].
When I try to log into the site or open any page e.g. [localhost] or whatever I get a 404 Not found error.
The only thing I can think of is that my stats page in Drupal admin says I am running MySQL database 4.1.21 whereas WAMP is looking for MySQL 5.x
Any suggestions?

But my Drupal site works fine until I have downloaded it from the web server and installed in WAMP. That is why I think there is something wrong with my WAMP install rather than in Drupal, but I will post there and see if anyone can help there.
Do you think the mismatch in MySQP version may have anythign to do with the problem?
