One little question about 'online'
Posted by: Eagle Creek (---.direct-adsl.nl)
Date: January 23, 2007 05:28PM

Hi! When I use the "put online" option: what am I doing? I'm blocking access to my server for everyone except for localhost. But: Why is it blocked? What's the trick?
==> With other words: how could I do this manually? <==
Because when it's 'offline', it's online but says 403 to all hosts except localhost.

Besides switch to online mode, you still have to enable port 80 in all firewalls and router so others can access your server, I mean your pages.

About do it manually, are you good in Apache coding? If yes, you can edit you config files.

You really don't get the question... Ill try to explain.

What I want to know is: What happens when I say "put server OFFline". Or when I say "put server ONline". What changes or settings are being made?

When in offline mode, only local can access your pages, while in online mode, your pages can be accessed everywhere, so it's not I don't get your question, but if you don't setup your hardware and software properly, no outsiders can access your pages even it's in online mode, and if you want to do it manually, you have to edit the config files; that's why I mentioned you can do it yourself if you're good in coding.

I think my question is as clear as can be.

What happens when I put the server offline?

I mean: you can anwser the following questions, can't you:
What happens when I click the lightswitch?
What happens when I start a car?
What happens when I press the power button of a computer?

I don't want to have the result, I want to have the proces!

So: what's changed so that the big ouside world can't access the server anymore from the moment I put if offline and vv.

LOL You're joking?

You click the lightswitch (you click "put server online"winking smiley -> the powercircle is completed ("something happens"winking smiley ==> electricity starts to flow ("somethings happens"winking smiley => there's light! (the server is online!)

You click "put server online" -> "it changes the code"==>"that code enable accessible to server" => the server is online!

he... he... ;-) just tease you a little bit as I've already mentioned if you're good in coding, you can edit the config files

Hope this is the answer you're looking for, and please, don't ask me what is that code and where exactly it locates.

Right question, but wrong person; I mean I'm not the person for that question, because I've seen that some people suggestion these codes need to be edit, but some others suggest that those codes need to change, so on, and I personally didn't change any code but only added codes for my vh and all my sites working fine, so you might want to check w/ Rom and PHPTeam who made this package

Morning! Morning! Morning!
After a good sleep night, now feel much better, so just want to tell you something I personally experienced. After post your new message which addresses straight to the creators, while waiting for replying, just spent a little time to read the code of config files, eventually you will get an idea or two how it processes, and if you're good coder, you might get it in just one read, not a clumsy coder like me, I spent a whole week to read over and over again to figure out just the BASIC of how vh works, he... he.... ;-)

Good luck
