LAN versus WAN access

I've spent hours tinkering with this - including much time searching through posts on this forum, but nothing quite addresses my problem:

With WAMP running online, I can access my site using [localhost] without any problem.

However, after setting up port forwarding on my router and turning off all firewalls (as recommended in all the posts I've read), my browser still times out when attempting to access my site using my router's external address.

One interesting point that may be helpful:

- When I enable the port forwarding for port 80 on my router and test connectivity to my site, it takes a good 20-30 seconds to time out.

- When I remove the port forwarding, it times out right away.

That leads me to believe the router is doing its job with the port forward, and something else is getting in the way.

Any ideas? I beg your patient and simple responses, as I'm a relative newbie.

Not sure what you mean it, but get your web ip by clicking the link below, then put that number in your browser then post back here what you see.

[whereismyip.com]

if still not see anything, try it w/ direct connect, not through router, it should work.

I read several posts that suggested that, and tried it. The IP listed at whereismyip is the same as that found in my router's "status" page. As stated in my initial post, the page simply times out.

Direct connect through the DSL modem is not an option for two reasons:

1. There are several machines running on my LAN, all of which need internet access, and
2. I've put my DSL modem in bridge mode, which makes it very unlikely to be the culprit.

I could try taking the modem out of bridge mode and connecting directly, but I don't understand where that would get me...

if you don't try it, you don't know where the problem actually comes from. If you succeded from direct connect, so you know your port forward not right. If not, you know your configure not right. Got it?
