a few questions for starting a wamp server
Posted by: DeathfireD (---.ipt.aol.com)

Ok since I cant get normal apache to run on my server I successfully installed wamp. Now here are my questions:

1) After I installed wamp and turn on all services I can visit the root folder and any nested folders from my server but I cant visit anything from computers on the same network. Is their some security setting thats on by default that refuses other computers from visiting the server? If so how do I make it so anyone can view my web server?

2) I already have a mysql server on my computer server but one comes with wamp. Is it possible for me to just move all the old mysql folders int he data folder to the new mysql data folder and have it work? If not how would I go about using the old mysql server on the wamp taskbar menu without messing anything up?

1) Put your server in online mode through wamp tray icon and access by web ip

2) Use mysql console or phpmyadmin to export (i.e backup) and import (i.e restore) your databases.

well I have set it to online and no one can visit it on my network or internet.

I didnt really want to export the data since that takes to long with lots of data. I guess ill try moving the data folder to the new mysql and see what happends.

I'm curious about how t will end too smiling smiley

However you coul modify some lines from wampserver.ini and then instead of wamp's default mysql ou could your own too. Just replace all the "wampmysqld" in wampserver.ini with the service name of your mysql server. But I do not recommend it a lot because you can blow up something and cause your wamp to not work at all. Also wampserver updates will be problematic with this option. So use at your own risk.

sorry for not getting back sooner. I've been trying hard to get apache to work so people on my network along with people on the internet can see it. But it seems it refuses to work so I haven't moved ahaid on trying to add my old mysql data to the new mysql folder.

in my httpd config file i've changed the listen port to 5122, opened that port up in my firewall, changed the servers name to ordway.ath.cx:5122 and also changed the security to allow from all and still no luck on letting outsiders in to view the site.....Is their something i'm missing?

He...he... ;-) Not jsut some thing, but a lot of things. You can't just change server name in config file and hope it works.

It's the production style which is beyond of the purposes of wamp server, so I can't give you detail here in this forum, but you can check my old post here for the idea

ya I was looking at that since you posted it before. I'm guessing that ill have to create a Virtual Host? Somehow that seems pointless....

So wamp is considered only for development purposes only huh? Thats kind of a pain. They should at the very least add a section for how to make your server public even if its set to private only as default. After all if I want to open my self up to hackers and the outside world then I should have the option to do so tongue sticking out smiley

anyway I guess Ill go try the vhosting and see how that works out. If that dosnt work then i'm heading over to some other apache forums to figure something out. This is taking way to long to get running.

You are missing too many things. I can point out the main things, then you have to research for detail to do them, ok?

BTW, if you read my old post carefully, then put all important things together, you can figure out what you're missing

well the reason why I ask you to e-mail me with step by step instructions is because I did try what you said and it still does not work. I made a Vdirectory made new folders for logs and added in blank log files, set it to listen on the port I wanted, set the root directory and access rights and all that good stuff and still nothing happens.

so.....as you can see i'm stuck and would like someone to at least e-mail me steps on how to make it successfully work so external people can visit the site.

Still didn't see you mentioned ANYTHING related to main things you're missing besides VH

I might just post the main things on my site so you guys can check what you might be missing

If you could give me step by step instructions that it would help me figure out what I need to do. The of course post back/e-mail back if something goes wrong.

You know I can't give you detail instruction here and they're too long for email, so read my old post again and pay attention to 3 main things that you're missing: domain (setup name server), dns/dynip (setup A records and C records), webserver (setup VH).

Good luck,

hmm ok I'm confused about the domain (setup name server) and DNS/dynip (setup A records and C records).

As for VH heres what I have in my config.
I have at the top

Listen 5122

NameVirtualHost ordway.ath.cx:5122

<VirtualHost ordway.ath.cx:5122>
ServerAdmin abd@test.com
DocumentRoot c:\wamp\www
ServerName ordway.ath.cx:5122
ErrorLog c:\wamp\www\logs\error.log
CustomLog c:\wamp\www\logs\access.log common
<Directory c:\wamp\www>
Option Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
Order deny, allow
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Can you please make it more clear what it is I need to do from here with some examples and where to find the sections I need to type the stuff. I dont like guessing games and its a pain having 3 or 4 apache2 config files opened trying to find out what wamp is missing.

Where do you get that "ordway.ath.cx"? If that "ordway.ath.cx" doesn't exist in your dns, it's not real, period. You see my signature, all my sites were setup in my dns, and that why dns can route all traffic to my sites.

You can setup vh in your computer, but not w/ domain and dns. For domain, you have to buy it like I bought mine at Yahoo Business for $3/yr and 5 yrs for $15, and not long ago they send me advertised for domain onsale for $2/yr. For dns, you have to register for it, some free famous ones like zoneedit.com, dyndns.org, so on...

Have fun

im using [www.dyndns.com] and its alwase been routed to my current ip. I have my firewall/router auto touch dyndns to keep the address using my current ip. So I have no idea what your talking about by setting up an A and C list. This isnt a real domain name so their shouldnt be any need for any of that since its just pointing to my ip.

My overall goal here is just to get it so when people go to ordway.ath.cx:5122 they see a web page then if they go to an alias ordway.ath.cx:5122/testsite/ another site loads and so on........

In all the server software i've used in the past I have never had to touch VH at all. So im totaly confused as to why I need it..

So I hope you can still help me here.

Because you're using dynip service so I don't think you need VH, just store your sites in www and access them straight from there. For example: your ip is 123.345.567.789 and you have site1 and site2 and store them like this

c:/wamp/www/site1
c:/wamp/www/site2

then access them like this

[123.345.567.789]
[123.345.567.789]

It should works. If not, connect your computer directly to internet, I mean do NOT go through any router, hub, or switch, and also disable firewall, then try again. It should works. After verifyying it works, reconnect firewall and router w/ port forward enable.

Have fun

Wow that docent seem right at all. This is the first i've ever heard that you have to use VH for one site.

Ok well A and C records are not needed in dynip because it auto points to my IP no matter what and since ath.cs dosnt let you have have sub domains (ie. test.ordway.ath.cx ) their really is no need for A or C records at least I don't think.

As for VH.......on apache's site I read this "The term Virtual Host refers to the practice of maintaining more than one server on one machine, as differentiated by their apparent hostname. For example, it is often desirable for companies sharing a web server to have their own domains, with web servers accessible as www.company1.com and www.company2.com, without requiring the user to know any extra path information."

This is not what I want to do. I only have one address and I just want to make my server open to the public via ordway.ath.cx:5122 nothing else. I had my friend install apache2 on Linux and it worked without any VH so I don't understand.

[start rant]
Sorry if I seem mad but this is getting repetitive. Each community I go to and ask about how to make my server open to public (with apache2 or wamp) everyone steps around the subject saying you will open your self up to hackers and crackers and they end up not answering me.........whats the point of downloading an open source project if you cant get answers on things you want to test. Jeez I haven't had any problems like this with other software like IIS, badblue, brs web weaver, pi3 web..they just work.
[end rant]

and again sorry if I seem mad but you have to understand its been a week and I still have no clear answer on how to get any flavor of apache working yet my friends can load it on linux or mac and it just works without any changes at all.
