lol >.< you had me scared this whole time with all that VH talk.

But still even when its directly connected no one can see it. It either times out or people get a error.

I've shut down all firewall software on all the computers I try it on and still the same result.

So to recap I've set Listen to 5122

changed the servers name to ordway.ath.cx:5122 and also changed the security to allow from all and I commented out the Deny from all part since its not needed.

Along with all that VH talk I had to comment it out since it was stopping apache from starting. So the code I posted before

IE:

NameVirtualHost ordway.ath.cx:5122

<VirtualHost ordway.ath.cx:5122>
ServerAdmin abd@test.com
DocumentRoot c:\wamp\www
ServerName ordway.ath.cx:5122
ErrorLog c:\wamp\www\logs\error.log
CustomLog c:\wamp\www\logs\access.log common
<Directory c:\wamp\www>
Option Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
Order deny, allow
Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Is all commented out.

So this leads me back to like my 3rd post. What is it that needs to be set to allow external connections. Their has to be some part in the config thats refusing access to everything but localhost since thats all I can use to visit the sites. network and external cannot visit the server.

PS thanks for your help so far.

NO, everything should be reset back to default, even the server name; then type in your web ip in browser, then post here what you see. You only need to disable firewall in computer has wamp installed just for testing in case you don't see anything from other computers. If you don't know your web ip, use this to get it

You might wonder why you can't use ordway.ath.cx because when use whois lookup, it returns this

No match found for ordway.ath.cx.

While it supposes to be like mine:

Domain Name: JLBN.COM
Registrar: MELBOURNE IT, LTD. D/B/A INTERNET NAMES WORLDWIDE
Whois Server: whois.melbourneit.com
Referral URL: [www.melbourneit.com]
Name Server: NS17.ZONEEDIT.COM
Name Server: NS3.ZONEEDIT.COM
RRP Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Updated Date: 16-Oct-2006
Creation Date: 16-Jan-2006
Expiration Date: 16-Jan-2011

As you can see that my domain is a valid registered through MELBOURNE IT, which is the same Domain Registra for Microsoft's, and that's why my domain can be globally accessible.

Ok lets back up. The reason im here in the first place is becuse WAMP did not allow network or remote access to it by default. It only allowed localhost access. I tryed using the IP of the computer on my network (192.168.1.102) then I tryed using the external IP of my cable modem. Its a no go.

So then I went in and changed the server name to ordway.ath.cx since that is my IP (I also tryed using just my IP) and that didnt work.

The reason Ordway.ath.cx dosnt show up is due to the ath.cs server. It wouldnt show you any info since its not a real domain name you pay for. However if you go to the website DNSstuff and do a DNS lookup on it you can see the IP of my web servers computer. You can even access it since its on and using a diffrent web server software (not apache) [ordway.ath.cx]

Anyway with that said, no Wamp does not work out of the box on any of my computers. Like you already said It only allows localhost access for security reasons. After reading the config I could see it denys all access but accepts from only localhost (127.0.0.1) so I commented out deny access from all and changed the accept from only 127.0.0.1 to accept from all. Still it does not work.

So to recap, ordway.ath.cx works only if you add the port to the server (ie. ordway.ath.cx:5121), any web server software other then apache works, wamp only accepts localhost requests.

Any ideas now?

So you already had another webserver running!? In theory, change listen to different port, it should work, but practically, it might still conflict, and you know what, I spend too much time to help you out, but you hide this critical info all along instead stated it in the first post. That's it, all I can say is people can access their wampserver by ip as seen here:

[forum.wampserver.com]

Good luck.

I'm not mad or something, but when you have more than 1 webserver, it's not easy to figure out where the problem actually comes from. I personally experienced w/ iis and wampserver. At first, they seem ok, then starting to have problem here and there even after shut down iis, and I'm so stupid to figure out what wrong. Finally, I have to re-format hd and now has only wampserver.

yeah, i mean... we all have to try by ourselves to solve our own issues.

in the other hand, when trying to explain an issue to somebody it is very important to be brief and consistent on what you state. i work at hp and most unsolved issues are caused by end users not being able to explain properly whats going on.
theres nothing like having a dedicated machinne for an application, specially a web server.

Because you're using dynip service so I don't think you need VH, just store your sites in www and access them straight from there. For example: your ip is 123.345.567.789 and you have site1 and site2 and store them like this

c:/wamp/www/site1
c:/wamp/www/site2

then access them like this

[123.345.567.789]
[123.345.567.789]

It should works. If not, connect your computer directly to internet, I mean do NOT go through any router, hub, or switch, and also disable firewall, then try again. It should works. After verifyying it works, reconnect firewall and router w/ port forward enable.

I think this is clear more than enough because I've just installed wampserver for my friend yesterday and did the same and it worked right away. Now, all she needs is get a domain for people more easier to remember her sites.

And your jump to conclusions after I mention I have another web server rofl.

Ok the first post I posted is exactly what I wanted yet you throw in VH and all this other bull about wamp being for developers and they don't allow external viewing by default. So I say ok I can understand why they wouldn't like that on by default but I still don't understand why your suggesting to use VH when apache should be like any other web server software, where all you have to do is have one root folder, change some things int he config to allow access and be on your merry way.

Second I explain a number of times that this wamp is not on my original web server computer since it would conflict with my current setup. So in turn I installed it on my laptop to make sure I understand everything before installing it on my real web server computer. Still you explain I need VH.

It wasn't till the very end where I re-state that no one can access the server and that ordway.ath.cx is my ip that you actually get what i'm asking. I can understand why your mad but I've been waiting here a week and a half now and I see you walk around in circles about what I should do. When all I asked in the first place what how to make wamp accessible for remote users and network users.

c:/wamp/www/site1
c:/wamp/www/site2
then access them like this
[123.345.567.789]
[123.345.567.789]

This is what I asked at the very beginning and guess what It dosnt work! with or without IP.

Everything you said is not working. Wamp is still not accessible to anyone other then localhost. I've tried hooking the laptop right to the cable modem and still the same result. I've tried installing it on a whole different network that a friend owns and still the same result. Their is simply something that is missing.

So ill wait for your answer again since all this other stuff is simple not working.

Well I ended up just installing it on my real web server and saving it as a service and for some reason that made it work. That odd since being a service or not shouldn't matter but o well everything works now once I went through the config file again and set everything to allow from all.

Thanks for your help even though it started out all wrong :/

ya I was looking at that since you posted it before. I'm guessing that ill have to create a Virtual Host? Somehow that seems pointless....
anyway I guess Ill go try the vhosting and see how that works out.

Read your previous posts. You mentioned about it first, then I base on your post to answer, now you turn around and put a claim on me. How sweet!!!

As mentioned, I've already got problem w/ my system that has more than 1 web server and couldn't solve that problem, so I have no idea how to help you w/ that. One thing I know for sure that people can access wampserver by ip as I've installed wamp server in more than 50 units for friends and at least 10 of them still using ip right now. You can test it yourself from people in this forum through the link above.

So, if you really want an answer from me, here it is. Back up all your data to somewhere else safe, re-format hard drive, re-install windows, disable windows firewall, then install wampserver. Make sure to test it works before re-install 3-party antivirus+firewall such as Norton, McAfee and other applications, and finally restore all data backed up earlier. Remember to test wampserver after EACH installation so you might find out what is the cause. That is the way I did for my system and all units mentioned above.

Have fun

Well like I said for some reason wamp only works correctly for me when its installed as a service. As soon as I uninstall it and disable the service it only works on localhost...which makes no since but thats something I can live with since I needed it as a service anyway.

On another note mysql did read all the files fine when I copied and pasted the data folder from my old mysql server to the new data folder. I can view, post, edit, delete data on a few of my installed message boards that use mysql. The only issue is some of the DBs for other things are acting up but I'm sure after looking more into it I can figure out whats going on.

Aside from some hiccups (php parsing errors and warnings showing) wamp is running smooth with no problems now. I guess all thats left is to sit down and fix the db problems and figure out why some php code dosnt work.

Can you post a detailed guide of it?
I'm also interested on that 'cause I got the same issue.

from what he said, when you install wampserver, just select it start as service, then after install, put your wampserver in online mode through tray icon. that's all.

First question I have to ask is are you installing it on windows XP? If you are then that may be your problem right their. I noticed after I got it running fully on my win2k box that when I went back to my test laptop (winxp) to see if I could install it as a service that It still didn't work. However it works fine on windows2000 and windows 2003. I don't know the reason why XP docent like it but you wouldn't want to be running a web server off that OS anyway.

Just download wamp, when you install it, one of the steps will ask if you want to run it as a service just click the little check box and click next and it should work.

did you disable windows firewall?

I've installed wampserver and have no problem in win2k, xp home and pro, win2k3 and even vista. Just never tried it in win98.

ya winXP had all security stuff off. I just installed wamp on win98 and it works fine on that also. Seems like XP home and XP pro don't like it though.
